There's a good-natured stereotype/joke that lesbians love flannel, but I've never seen that applied to gay/bi men, or taken super seriously. It's definitely not something the average person would necessarily think of when seeing someone, especially a guy, wearing flannel.
While a shift in aesthetics and cultural norms have proven our gay radar to be be more important than ever, the lesbian flannel is well and truly frayed. Let her rest.
Now when she sees someone wearing a plaid flannel shirt, she wonders whether they are gay or straight. When the straight community remixes something that has been made popular within the LGBTQ+ community, its meaning essentially becomes lost. This also applies to the fanny pack trend.
